Building the Paul Sellers Workbench – Update/Day 5

Sections I call ‘slabs’ are red.

Since the plan of scrubbing after glue-up went well on the first (front) slab, I began the process on the second slab. The stock was slightly more challenging to get jointed than that for the front slab.

The glue-up for this slab went poorly. I started out fine using James Thompson’s recommendation of dampening the boards with a water spritzer. In the middle of the second board the clog-resistant tip clogged. In a panic I unscrewed the lid. Let’s suffice to say regulating glue is difficult without some sort of a tip. I’m quite glad I had dampened the boards as I was gluing, because I just got the clamps tightened during the open time. Just.

Over the course of a couple days I unclamped and scrubbed the top of the second slab. This was a bit more work due to all the extra glue removal.

I also cut to size and started planing the skirts. This is fairly quick work using the wooden jack to remove material and a jointer to finish. The jointing took some time, but went well. It is definitely easier to work three edge joints than six face joints. I decided to add some pegs to each joint, more on the reasoning and method in the post to follow.
